1994-97 Probe

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to update the model year coverage, add a concern to the title, and revise the Service Procedure.

ISSUE Automatic transmission fluid may be seeping from the grommet-style vent assembly and down the main control cover or may be leaking fluid from the fluid fill tube on some vehicles. The appearance of fluid on the main control cover may be misdiagnosed as a leak in the cooler line and/or main control cover gasket.
ACTION Diagnose leak and repair by referring to the following Service Procedure for details.
NOTE: BEGINNING JANUARY 1997, ALL CD4E TRANSAXLES CONTAIN A REVISED MAIN CONTROL COVER (F7RZ-7G004-AA), FIGURE 1, AND VENT TUBE ASSEMBLY (F7RZ-7034-CA FOR PROBE AND F7RZ-7034-BA FOR CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE), FIGURE 2. THIS NEW DESIGN WILL PREVENT FLUID FROM SEEPING FROM THE VENT. IF THE VENT HOSE IS KINKED OR BLOCKED INTERNALLY, FLUID WILL LEAK FROM THE TRANSAXLE FILL TUBE.

For 1995-1997 Contour/Mystique Vehicles Built With Grommet-Style Vent Assembly Main Control Cover:

NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLING NEW VENT TUBE, PURGE ANY OBSTRUCTION FROM THE HOSE LINE USING LOW PRESSURE AIR SUPPLY. HIGH PRESSURE CAN BLOW PAST ANY OBSTRUCTION WITHOUT EVACUATING THE HOSE. WHEN INSTALLING THE HOSE, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION SHEET PROCEDURE WITH THE VENT TUBE KIT, ENSURING THE HOSE IS NOT KINKED.

If fluid is detected on the main control cover near the vent and the area around the grommet is damp, check the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is below the crosshatched area, check for alternate leaks. If the fluid level is between the crosshatched area, service with Remote Vent Kit (F6RZ-7034-AA).

If replacement of a main control cover is required, replace with a new Main Control Cover (F7RZ-7G004-AA) and a Vent Tube Assembly (F7RZ-7034-BA).

For 1994-1997 Probe Vehicles:

NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLING NEW VENT TUBE, PURGE ANY OBSTRUCTION FROM THE HOSE LINE USING LOW PRESSURE AIR SUPPLY. HIGH PRESSURE CAN BLOW PAST ANY OBSTRUCTION WITHOUT EVACUATING THE HOSE. WHEN INSTALLING THE HOSE, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION SHEET PROCEDURE WITH THE VENT TUBE KIT, ENSURING THE HOSE IS NOT KINKED.

Transaxles built with grommet-style vent assembly main control cover CANNOT be serviced with the new main control cover. If cover replacement is required, service with the grommet-style vent assembly Main Control Cover (F4RZ-7G004-A).

If repairing a vent seeping problem on the grommet-style vent assembly main control cover, use the Remote Vent Kit (F6RZ-7034-BA).

For 1997 Probe, 1998-2000 Contour/Mystique, And 1999-2000 Cougar Vehicles:

NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLING NEW VENT TUBE, PURGE ANY OBSTRUCTION FROM THE HOSE LINE USING LOW PRESSURE AIR SUPPLY. HIGH PRESSURE CAN BLOW PAST ANY OBSTRUCTION WITHOUT EVACUATING THE HOSE. WHEN INSTALLING THE HOSE, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION SHEET PROCEDURE WITH THE VENT TUBE KIT, ENSURING THE HOSE IS NOT KINKED.

Vehicles built with the new designed main control cover must use the new Main Control Cover (F7RZ-7G004-AA) and/or new design Vent Tube Assembly (F7RZ-7034-CA for Probe, F7RZ-7034-BA for Contour/Mystique) if replacement is required.

NOTE: FOR PROBE APPLICATIONS ONLY, THE NEW DESIGN MAIN CONTROL COVER AND NEW DESIGN TUBE ASSEMBLY CANNOT BE INSTALLED ON PREVIOUS MODEL VEHICLES DUE TO A REVISED AIR CLEANER DESIGN.

Service Procedure

NOTE: USE THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE IF REPLACEMENT OF THE NEW DESIGN MAIN CONTROL COVER AND/OR NEW DESIGN TUBE ASSEMBLY IS REQUIRED.

NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLING NEW VENT TUBE, PURGE ANY OBSTRUCTION FROM THE HOSE LINE USING LOW PRESSURE AIR SUPPLY. HIGH PRESSURE CAN BLOW PAST ANY OBSTRUCTION WITHOUT EVACUATING THE HOSE. WHEN INSTALLING THE HOSE, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION SHEET PROCEDURE WITH THE VENT TUBE KIT, ENSURING THE HOSE IS NOT KINKED.

PROBE

Fully seat straight end of tube onto brazed fitting on main control cover. Mount clamp securely onto brazed fitting to secure tube assembly (Figure 3).
Route tube assembly toward rear of vehicle.
NOTE: BE SURE 90 DEGREE ELBOW IS FACING DOWNWARD.

Install tube assembly on air cleaner housing and align white dot with retaining bracket closest to front of vehicle. Insert 90 degree elbow end of tube assembly into air cleaner clamp. Allow approximately 25mm (1") of free tube (Figure 4).
CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE, COUGAR

Fully seat straight end of tube onto brazed fitting on main control cover. Mount clamp securely onto brazed fitting to secure tube assembly (Figure 3).
Route tube assembly upward toward the rear of the battery (Figure 5).
Attach clip to battery hold-down bracket bolt (Figure 6).
Be sure 90 degree tube end is routed downward (Figure 7).
NOTE: USE SERVICE KITS FOR PREVIOUS DESIGN GROMMET-STYLE VENT ASSEMBLY MAIN CONTROL COVER.

The 1994-1997 2.0L CD4E Probe Remote Vent Kit (F6RZ-7034-BA) consists of the following parts:

One (1) Vent Tube - 460mm (18.1")
One (1) Barbed Vent Body
One (1) Clamp
One (1) White Plastic Clip
One (1) Black Steel Clip
One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. 7142A)
The 1995-1997 Contour/Mystique Remote Vent Kit (F6RZ-7034-AA) consists of the following parts:

One (1) Vent Tube - 640mm (25.2")
One (1) Barbed Vent Body
One (1) Clamp
One (1) White Plastic Clip
One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. 7143A)
